It is with great sadness that we share the news that long-serving paramedic Tim Sands passed away on Friday 23 October 2026.

Tim joined Lincolnshire Ambulance Service – now East Midlands Ambulance Service – in 1988, dedicating nearly 40 years of his life to helping people across Lincolnshire in their time of need.

He began his career as an ambulance technician before progressing to paramedic, a role he held for the majority of his career.

Outside of work, Tim enjoyed spending time with his wife, Dawn. He loved travelling, particularly visits to the Lake District, and the pair enjoyed going on cruises together.

Reflecting on his father’s life and legacy, his son Luke said:

“Dad dedicated almost 40 years of his life helping people in their time of need, so we are incredibly proud that, through organ donation, he has been able to continue helping others by giving three people a new lease of life.

“That was the man, and the hero, I have known for 27 years. Knowing that he has continued to save lives after his death is a lasting legacy and one that means a great deal to us as a family.

“Over the last week, we have seen just how respected and loved he was within EMAS. The support, kindness and memories shared by colleagues have brought us real comfort at such a difficult time, and we cannot thank people enough.”

Tim’s family have asked us to share a GoFundMe page which has been set up to support Dawn and Luke following Tim’s sudden death. Anyone wishing to show their support can visit the In memory of Tim Sands fundraiser.

Richard Henderson, EMAS Chief Executive said:

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of a highly respected colleague. Tim’s dedication, professionalism and kindness impacted so many.

“He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege to work alongside him.”

David Forman, Station Manager for Skegness and Mablethorpe said:

“One of the things I will remember most about Tim is his warmth and sense of humour. He was always smiling, always ready with a joke and always had time for a conversation.

“He took immense pride in his work and in supporting those around him. Over the years he became a much-loved colleague and friend to many people across the service, and his loss will be felt deeply.”

Sue Cousland, Divisional Director for Lincolnshire said:

“Tim is fondly remembered and will be sorely missed by colleagues, patients and families alike.

“His approach out on the East Coast was far more than that of a job and he was an extremely kind, considerate and compassionate clinician. He left a very positive impression upon everyone he met, including his feline friends.

“Our thoughts are with Dawn, Luke and Tim’s wider family at such a sad time.”
