At EMAS we have a Peer to Peer (P2P) and Pastoral Care Worker (PCW) network of staff who provide a listening ear for fellow EMAS colleagues and volunteers.
The idea of the P2P role is that talking to someone who has a shared experience to you, may help you to work through your worries or concerns.
P2P/PCW volunteers are not counsellors, but they have been trained in techniques such as active listening and signposting to identify the right avenue of support.
We recently spoke to Mick Clarke, who is a Domestic, about his P2P role.
Mick said: "I’ve been a P2P for over 13 years."I see lots of people every day on the station, so lots of people come to me to talk."I volunteered to be a P2P as I enjoy helping people. I like to look after those on the station as they are good people who do a good job. I’m always bringing in treats for everyone."I think we’ve all got to do our bit to help EMAS be a good place to work. If it is then we also all do a better job."Colleagues come to me from all sorts of roles, from A&E, Non-emergency Patient Transport Services and management."People know where I am and I’ll always be there wearing my P2P badge and ready to help."
Chesterfield Station Manager Stuart Tilt said:"Mick is an active and dedicated member of the P2P network and has consistently provided meaningful support to colleagues across a wide range of personal and professional circumstances. His engagement extends beyond informal support, as he effectively signposts individuals to appropriate internal and external services, ensuring that colleagues are able to access specialist assistance when required."Mick’s commitment is not limited to Chesterfield Station; he actively supports colleagues across the wider team, demonstrating flexibility, inclusivity, and a strong sense of organisational responsibility. His sustained commitment of time, energy, and passion significantly enhances staff wellbeing and organisational resilience. For all this Mick, a huge thank you for all that you do and bring to the role, team and EMAS family."
We currently have 139 P2P and PCW volunteers.
