The daughter of a former miner who sadly passed away has been reunited with the ambulance crew who attended her father and took him on his final journey.

Ronald Morris, 75, a former miner, was experiencing breathing difficulties on 5 January and a district nurse called an ambulance to take him to King’s Mill Hospital.

Sadly, Ronald was diagnosed with lung cancer and just two days later he died in hospital from pneumonia, surrounded by his family.

The Morris family was so impressed with ambulance crew Gillian Woodward and Gary Ellis, who attended Ronald, that they decided to have a collection at his funeral for Kingsmill Ambulance Station.

Ronald’s daughter, Gail, recently visited the ambulance station to present Gillian and Gary with a cheque for £100, and dozens of packets of biscuits and chocolates for the crews.

Gail said: “When he was in the hospital, dad had said to me ‘make sure you say a big thank you to Gillian and Gary, they were brilliant’.

“Dad was such a character, and they hit it off with him straight away and put him at ease.

“It was a difficult time for the family but having those two there made it so much easier.

Gary explained that they always work hard to make patients as comfortable as possible, especially when they need to go into hospital.

He said: “Ronald was a bit frightened and very frustrated when we first arrived, but by the time we left for the hospital, he was laughing and joking.

“We were very sad to hear Ronald had passed away, and so touched that they wanted to donate so much money to our station. We will be having a think about how we can spend it in his memory.”

Charitable donations to our service will be used to help us to buy new pieces of medical equipment, specialist ambulances or to provide improved recreational facilities for our staff.
