Air Ambulances
Here at EMAS we have access to a number of air ambulance services:
Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance
Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance
Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance
There are several reasons why EMAS' Control may scramble an air ambulance including:
- If staff in our control centre know that all land-based ambulances in the immediate area are occupied.
- If land-based crews at the scene of an incident feel that the patient would benefit from being taken to hospital as quickly as possible.
- If it's clear that a land-based ambulance will take time to arrive at the scene. This may be for a number of reasons - including traffic hold-ups in urban areas, distance in rural locations or inaccessible terrain.
- If the patient needs to be taken to a hospital elsewhere in the UK for specialised treatment.
It costs approximately £60,000 per month to keep just one aircraft operational and each one is funded entirely by charitable donations.
Fundraising is an ongoing activity and campaigns are often spearheaded by people who've actually been rescued by an air ambulance - we're delighted to say that members of the public are only too willing to 'put their hands in their pocket' to help with the running costs.
Private companies also provide much needed income. The most notable sponsor is the Automobile Association who, as well as supporting our aircraft, have ploughed significant funding into Air Ambulance Services throughout the UK.
